Leo Lindquist “Hunting birds” 1984
This painting is of the way it used to be. The painting is of a Native American in the act of shooting a bird in the air with a bow. When I first saw that painting I was walking though the campus art gallery and saw this painting and, being a hunter, I thought of how difficult it would be to shoot a bird with a bow. How the struggle of life is nothing compared to those who could not eat if they didn’t kill something every day. I was caught; the painting held my attention for solid length of time. The person’s expression, the clarity of the painting, and the beauty of the bird trying the escape are all performing an action. The person is ending life to preserve his own, and the bird in a struggle for its own life. This was all initially was I thought.
After reading about the artist, and about the painting I learned that my initial reaction was far more imaginary than the author’s intention. The author’s inspiration was a photo in a catalog. I was hoping that he was a first hand witness, or at least a depiction of something that was described to him from a Native American, but I suppose that is was imagination is for. Life is far less exciting. The painting was beautiful.
